Kitchen Cabinet Woods, Finishes and Colors

Cherry

A slightly hard and relatively light wood known for its tight graining and elegant coloring. A frequently occurring feature specific to cherry are its gum pockets, otherwise known as pitch pockets. They are small black flecks or streaks in the wood caused by dried sap pockets. Color varies from almost white to light brown to pinkish red, giving it a wider variation in color than most people know. Lighter stains will show this variation, so the buyer should be aware of this characteristic. Another very important characteristic of cherry is its sensitivity to light. Cherry will darken over time with exposure to any light, especially the sun. This darkening will happen with all cherry and even after it has been finished. Understanding the aging process of cherry is important before purchasing this beautiful wood.

Hickory

A very hard, heavy wood known for its extremely bold and distinct open graining and color variations. A single board of hickory lumber can have several color variations from almost white to dark brown and black. Dark mineral deposits are common. Extreme color variation is expected in hickory and that is what gives hickory its charm.

Knotty Alder

A smooth, fine-grained hardwood with a straight grain pattern similar to cherry. Color varies from pale pinkish-brown to a light tan or honey color. Knotty alder is chosen for its rugged appearance. Knots will be random in size and distribution and will range from tight sound knots to very rustic, split, and open knots.

Maple

A hard and heavy wood known for its lighter color and tight graining (less distinct grain). Maple commonly has mineral streaks, which are dark streaks in random sizes running through the grain of the wood. These mineral streaks are noticeable markings because they contrast the natural color of maple. Color varies from creamy white and light blond to medium brown or reddish tones. It is susceptible to mellowing and darkening with exposure to light. Maple has become very popular of late due to its tight grain and use with glazed finishes.

Oak

The most traditional and commonly used wood species in cabinetry for many years. It is known for its distinctive open graining and attractive price. Oak lumber can vary from almost white to brown to gray. These are normal variations in the color of oak, and are to be expected in cabinetry. The lighter the stain, the more noticeable the variations.

Paint

Shiloh's standard collection of painted finishes features EIGHT colors available available on any of our door styles except METRO and in any of our wood species, although Maple is the most common. If considering another wood species, it is highly recommended that you view a sample of paint in another wood species before ordering. Our painted finishes are available with any of our Traditional glazes or Highlight glazes.

Notes about Painted finishes: Painted products will show evidence of slight crack lines at joints in doors, frames, and at glue joints in panels due to natural expansion and contraction of wood (especially evident with inset cabinetry). Door panels may shrink, exposing unfinished areas of wood, if proper humidification is not maintained in storage and after installation. These are normal characteristics of wood and will not be considered as cause for replacement. Some components of our painted cabinetry will be MDF due to its' stability and quality for painted products.

Traditional Glazes

The following five glaze colors are available on most stain and paint colors. They are available at NO UPCHARGE. Our glazes are hand applied and wiped. This hand applied technique results in variation in amount of glaze material retained from piece to piece. Variation in consistency is normal and not reason for replacement.

Highlight Glaze

The Highlight glaze is a more subtle glazing technique than our traditional glaze and is only available on painted finishes in select colors (see chart below). The amount of Highlight material retained around doors, drawer fronts and other select components will vary from one piece to another. It features two highlight colors, Cafe and Slate, which are applied and wiped off by hand.

Highlight Glaze with Brushing Technique

The Brushing Technique is an optional finish technique that can be added to our Highlight glazes on paint. It is a hand applied technique used to simulate a brush painted finish. Variations in brush stroke intensity, direction or overlap from piece to piece are common and should be expected. The Brushing Technique is only available when using a Highlight glaze. Brushing is not available with our traditional glazes or on stained products.

Olde World

The Olde World finish collection replicates the look of significantly worn, painted cabinetry. These finishes feature worm holing, edge and panel gouging, glazing, wearing, dry brush glazing, rock dents, paint crackle, water spotting and a brown undertone. All parts of the cabinetry will receive will have some or all of the techniques applied. Due to the highly complicated and hand-applied techniques, variation from piece to piece and from job to job will be likely. The following colors are available on maple, knotty alder, cherry, hickory or oak. All of the samples shown below are on MAPLE.
